Resources for MS transition
At my internship I organized a panel of middle school students to come speak to 5th graders regarding their upcoming transition. The week prior, I had all 5th grade classes brainstorm questions or concerns they had in the following 5 categories: Academics/Homework, Teachers/Scheduling, Friendships/Relationship, 7th/8th graders, & Changes in body/brain/emotions. I compiled all the questions and sorted them by most frequent and relevant. Attached is the list of these questions, rank ordered within category. I met with the group of panel students beforehand to field some potential questions and assess there answers. Basically, I said we were looking to ease 5th graders anxiety, yet honest answers were best. So for example, if they had experienced bullying and chose to share that, I encouraged them to provide the 5th graders with advice about what they could do. Since the middle schoolers were not able to visit every 5th grade class, I video taped the panel discussion to show to the other classes. I also attached the parent letter that was sent home to reinforce parent involvement during this transitional time. Hope this helps :) -B
