Future Trends and Directions
School Counselors in the schools must understand and be prepared to play a vital role in special education. Although some schools may decide to not have the counselor be present at every meeting or IEP, students are not just part of special education. All kids are involved in general education classes and if nothing else, the school counselor can help support the transition of knowledge between the special education team and general education teachers. The school counselor can be aware of current interventions for students in general education and stay informed on what qualifies students for more directed support like special education. Currently, as the school counselor seeks to adhere to the ASCA position on equity for all students, it is important to understand that special education is a department within the school and the school counselor holds a responsibility to supporting those students as well. As the role of the school counselor shifts, so does the importance of them recognizing all student populations and remaining prepared to advocate and collaborate on their behalf.
